Dash cams are becoming increasingly popular in recent years due to the number of benefits to the driver. Where once they were only used as a tool for law enforcement, they are now being utilized in many civilian vehicles as well.
A dash cam is a recording camera that is attached to the dashboard of your vehicle, and it not only records what is occurring outside of the vehicle but also what is taking place on the inside. One of the major benefits of using a dash cam is that it can provide evidence for lawful or insurance purposes if an accident occurs, or you are exposed to a criminal act inside or outside your vehicle.
A good dash cam will record images as well as sound, and there are five other features that you should look for when choosing a dash cam.

When a camera records, the video is usually recorded on the memory card, but if the memory gets full, it will stop recording. What you really need, is a dash camera with a Loop Recording feature. This enables the camera to overwrite on to the memory card over videos that have been recorded previously.
This feature means that you don’t have to manually delete any footage to make more space for new recordings. This can be a vital advantage because it removes the possibility of you forgetting to delete, and the camera not recording when you need it to. If there is nothing you need to save, you can just let the camera carry on without interfering with the memory. However, if there has been some sort of incident and you want to keep the footage, you need to download it on to a computer or similar device before it is overwritten with new footage.
Like any other camera, your dash cam needs to have a very high level of resolution. Ideally, you should look for one that has the capability to record video up to 1080p HD, 12MP resolution. This higher resolution means that the camera can pick up more details such as road symbols and number plates more clearly than cameras with a lower resolution. After all, there’s no point in recording it if you can’t see it!
A really good dash cam with high resolution should also be capable of recording 30 frames per second. It’s also a good idea to choose a camera with a screen that is quite large so the footage is even clearer still.
Of course not everything you want to record will take place during the daylight hours, with a much higher statistic of car accidents occurring at night time when visibility is lower. Therefore, your dash cam needs to have superb night recording capabilities. With a special night recording option on the camera, the footage and images you record at night will be a lot clearer. Even license plates are clearly visible on a camera with super night recording.
By having a dash cam installed in your vehicle, it will help to improve your night driving by enhancing what you can see. Also, if you are in an accident, the recorded footage will be good enough to use as evidence.
Also called a ‘G-Sensor’, this piece of technology is essential in a dash cam. It automatically detects any kind of sudden shaking or a collision, and will ensure the footage isn’t overwritten. It has the intelligence to determine that what has been recorded might be useful, so it stops the loop recording from wiping it and recording over it.
This usually comes as a surprise to our readers. You won’t believe how many dash cam companies do not provide any customer support at all or you can only contact them via email and have to wait for days to get a reply. Dash cameras are generally quite expensive and you should be able to get in touch with customer support instantly if something goes wrong. Companies have to stand behind their product and do whatever it takes to deliver value to you for the price you paid. Unfortunately many dash cam brands do not care about their customers after the purchase. Good news is that there are those that truly care about you.
You may have thought that choosing the right dash cam was going to be a hard task, but it’s not really that complicated. In short, you want a camera that will record when you want it to, have excellent range and visual imagery, can sense when a recording is important and can record at low light or night time.
If you don’t look for those features, you will end up with a substandard product that will be pretty much useless to you. There’s no point in recording something that can’t be viewed or only recording a narrow-angle in front of your vehicle. If you are going to use a dash cam for the benefits of protecting yourself, you must get a top dash cam.
If you want a perfect dash cam that has all of the features mentioned above, we recommend the Explon Dash Cam (available on dbzon.com), with 1080P Full HD with 3″ LCD Screen, 120°Wide Angle, G-Sensor, Loop Recording and Motion Detection. Usually this can be done through the pinhole sized reset button on the device itself. Hold for 2-3seconds to start the process. Check the user manual if you have no idea of where the reset button locates.
1. Charge the camera for at least half an hour and make sure the car charger or USB cable works properly.
2. Dash cams need to be connected to a 12V car charger to operate.
3. Make sure the charger is connected properly and the indicator light is on. Test the camera with another charger unit. If there's nothing wrong with the charger, you can try to reset to factory default settings.
1. Make sure your memory card has been formatted and installed correctly. We recommend you to format the memory card once a month.
2. Make sure the 'Loop Recording' function is activated to prevent the camera from stopping once the memory card is full. Not all cameras have this feature. Please check the user manual.
3. 'Reset' the camera.
